Great work yesterday, both in class, and with the articles posted below! I'd like to take a moment to keep everyone up to date on what is due, and when...
for Thursday (tomorrow): Know your topic for the third paper, and bring in your source (from yesterday's assignment). We will complete a "building blocks" exercise in class.
for Tuesday: Bring in one copy of your complete rough draft for workshop. Also, look over http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/ so that you know how to use citations, etc. for this paper. Following the workshop, I will be available for conferencing about your paper. *ALSO--bring your "assessment and goals" exercise, which will be discussed in the previous class.
for Wednesday, by noon: This will be your last chance to email me a draft of your paper and definitely get comments back by the end of the day.
for Thursday (our last day): The final draft of your third paper is due. Late work will be lowered an entire letter grade per day it is late. I'm looking forward to reading these!

NEW PAPER DUE DATE
As discussed in class...
The second paper (ADDICTION) can be turned in two ways:
1. You can turn in your final draft (with pre-work) tomorrow in class.
OR
2. You can email it to me so that I receive it by Sunday at 9am.
Offering this extended time will maximize our opportunities to turn rough drafts into final ones, meet/email with me, and/or meet with Helen.
Please note: If I do not receive your paper by the time due, it will be counted as late--no exceptions.
Also please note: In Thursday's class, we will begin our third unit (LITERATURE), so please be ready to dive in!

Additional Readings for Addiction Unit
To enhance your course reader, I have located a number of readings online.
There is a wide variety in style and approach here--some are short little articles, others are in-depth research. Give yourself plenty of time to go through them, and remember to actively read. If you find yourself growing tired with one, take a break, and come back to it. I will expect that you have read all of them by class on Thursday, 2/12--a reading response will be due on that day. Since the readings are longer, the reading response should be 2-3 pages instead of the usual 1-2, and can be about as many of the articles as you like (1, 2, or even all of them).
Here goes:
Internet Addiction: http://www.netaddiction.com/articles/newdisorder.htm

About Tuesday's Class (1/20)
As you surely know, Tuesday (1/20) is a big day in American politics. And, as you may also realize, the inauguration will be taking place right smack in the middle of our class.
In (and out) of class, we will be completing a writing exercise focused on today’s events. If you are involved in any campus activities that are honoring/celebrating/just observing the event, and will miss class Tuesday, please email me as soon as possible, and I will forward you the assignment (which can be completed outside of class).
Thanks!

The "Missing" Lottery
It has come to my attention that the course reader is missing the last page of "The Lottery"--what a cliffhanger!
Here is the story in its entirety--please be sure to have read it all by Thursday. Thanks!

Meeting with Helen this Week
Hi Everyone--
Just wanted to let you know that, since class was canceled for today, Helen wasn't able to pass out the sign up sheet for appointments. However, if you would like to meet with her, she will be having her normal "drop by" office hours all week.
I know we haven't even started the first paper, but you can always meet with Helen to touch up any lingering writing issues, etc.
Thanks!

Urgent Class Information
Class on Tuesday, 1/13 is Canceled.
I hate canceling class, but I am having a medical situation right now that will keep me home-bound. All assignments, etc. will simply be moved a class up--more details on Thursday.
Also, naturally, I won't have office hours tomorrow, either.
Thank you for your understanding.
